Original information:
Thomas Hewitt (spelt Hewett on the passenger lists) (1825-1903), a carpenter, emigrated to Canterbury with his wife Emma (19). There was also a Charles Hewitt (1820-1870), an agricultural labourer, who migrated on the Cressy − this might be Thomas’s brother.

Readers’ response:
According to a family member, Thomas and Emma Hewitt were born in Polesworth, Warwickshire, England: Thomas on March 20, 1825, and Emma on May 6, 1833. The couple were married in Polesworth on August 22, 1850, and had 14 children − Samuel (b. December 5, 1851), Thomas Charles (b. 1852), Robert (b. 1854), James (b. May 23, 1855), Charlotte Emma (b. 1856), Sarah Ann (b. June 1, 1857), William Paul (b. December 14, 1859), Elizabeth (b. December 15, 1861), Agnes (b. August 18, 1863), Mathilda (b. April 29, 1866), Joseph (b. August 20, 1867), John Ensor (b. May 24, 1869), Louisa (b. November 29, 1870) and Frank Orton (b. January 25, 1874). Thomas died on November 14, 1903, and is buried at Waddington cemetery, Sheffield. Emma died on April 12, 1910, and at the time resided at 52 Vagues Road, Christchurch. 1

Charles Hewitt was definately Thomas Hewitts older brother

He was born in Polesworth in September 1819 and died in NZ in 1870

Although I have an extensive family history for Thomas I have never managed to find descendants for Charles so if there are any of you out there please let me know
