Original information:
Mrs Maria Free, nee Pattrick, was six when she emigrated to Canterbury with her family (see Thomas Patrick). According to records, in 1900 Mrs Free was living in Papanui.

Readers’ response:
According to sources, Maria married William Free in 1863. 1

    Maria Pattrick 1843 – 1911 was born at Hundleby, Lincolnshire, England, Maria died at Christchurch and is buried at Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch.

    Maria came to NZ with her parents Joseph & Alice Pattrick on the “Cressy”.

    In 1863 Maria married William Free 1840 – 1907, son of Thomas Free and ElizabethThompson. Maria and William had 11 children.

    Mary Jane Free 1864 – 1933, married in 1889 Joseph Reese 1864 – 1949 (son of John and Eliza Ann Meedings).
    Smith Laughton Pattrick Free 1867 – 1958, married 1st in 1892 Emily Constance Wyled 1866 – 1927 (daughter of James Wyled & Clara Rich) married 2nd in 1929 Alice Frances Aitken 1867 – 1964.

    Thomas Joseph Thompson Free 1869 – 1919, married 1900 Emily Abigail Goodland 1871 – ? (daughter of Walter Goodland and Emily Fanthane).

    William Ranford Seymore Free 1871 – 1872.

    Hedley Vicars FREE 1873 – 1952, married in 1897 Tessa Wensley PATTRICK 1874 – 1944 (daughter of Joseph Laughton Pattrick and Mary Dennis, Hedley and Tessa were first cousins).

    William Rainsford Seymore Free 1875 – 1906, married in 1902 Jane Beile Spepherd1877 – 1904.

    Creosie Stanley Plunket Free 1876 – 1940, married in 1904 Jeannie Stephenson Harrison 1879 – 1963.

    Henry Beecham Free 1878 – 1965, married 1st in 1910 Jean Adele Hamilton, 1878 – 1947, married 2nd Eva Maud Thompson 1886 – 1981.

    Annie Maria Free 1880 – 1881.

    Charles Leslie Free 1882 – 1883.

    Carlyle Sydney Free 1884 – 1909, married in 1907 Alice Maude Warne 1884 – ?
