Readers’ response:
This is Lucy Jane nee Evans, who was born in 1849 in Surrey, England, and was baptised at St Marks, Kensington, London, on February 10, 1850.

Her parents were Robert and Sarah Evans (nee Kitchener). Lucy married Benjamin Smith Pawsey on March 10, 1869. Benjamin and Sarah farmed “Wattle Grove’’ in the Cust Valley until 1904, when they moved to West Melton. The couple had nine children − Mary Ann Eliza, Sarah Ann Lucy, Honora Maria, Caroline Sophia, Benjamin Smith, Elizabeth Harriet (Eliza), Charlotte Emily, Joseph Arthur and Alice Frances. Lucy died on December 19, 1917, from carcinoma of the liver. 1

Lucy married secondly on 13 December 1910 at Christchurch Registry Office to James BROWN (b1854, Glasgow, Scotland). I have not found her grave yet but her first husband (Benjamin d 28 July 1906) and eldest daughter Mary Ann Eliza PAWSEY (d 22 Sep 1883 aged 9) are buried at St John’s Anglican Cemetery, Ashley Street, Rangiora.
