Eliza Eder nee Cleaver, who was born in Warwickshire, England, in 1840. She was aged 10 when she travelled with her family to Canterbury (see Henry Cleaver). The family’s first residence was a thatched dugout on the Port Hills. Eliza moved to Kaiapoi, where she married Mr Henry Eder in 1858.
Henry, born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1836, had a keen interest in the Anglican Church and was a sexton for many years.
He was a ship’s carpenter and found work as a sawyer in Kaiapoi. It is said that he built a ferry to cross the Waimakariri.
From 1859, Eliza and Henry lived in Woodend, where Henry farmed.
They had 12 children _ Anna Elizabeth (1859-1948), Henry Charles Theodore (1862-1931), Ellen Eliza (1864-1931), Henry Ferdinand (1866-1948), Emma (1868-1957), Walter (1870-1944), John Gothilf (1872-1957), George Arnold (1874-1918), Mary Eliza (1876-1962), Thomas Arthur (1878-1967), Lily Celina (1880-1958) and Frank Alick (1883-1920).
Eliza died on December 27, 1929, and Henry died on April 23, 1919. 1 Both are buried in St Barnabas’ Anglican cemetery, Woodend. 2 Many descendants still live around North Canterbury. Eders Road is named after this family. 3
