Original information:
Frederick George Brittan (1848-September 13, 1945) arrived in Canterbury when he was two with his parents William Guise (1809-July 18, 1876) and Louisa, and his siblings Emily Louisa (7), William (1844-1916) and Harriet Louisa (4).

Frederick’s father, William Guise Brittan, was chairman of the Society of Canterbury Colonists, a member of the Freemasons, and the Commissioner of Waste Lands.

William Guise was buried in St Paul’s Anglican Church yard, Papanui, and his headstone reads “One of the founders of Canterbury’’.

Records show that Frederick George was a clergyman for the Church of England and a schoolmaster. In 1900, he was living in Christchurch.

Readers’ response:
According to a family member, Frederick was the last Canterbury pilgrim to die; he was aged 97. 1
