Henry Salt (1837-December 26, 1901) was 13 when he emigrated with his parents Eli, a bricklayer (1817-1893), and Hannah (31), and his brothers William (1839-1887) and Samuel (9).

Eli Salt gained renown for allegedly stealing a door. The family first settled in Barrack 2, Room 2. They then moved to London Street, where Eli set up as a bricklayer and brickmaker. In 1851, Eli bought a house and land from widow Charlotte Lesslie. Salts Gully is named after Eli. Henry apparently took cattle for grazing in Cass Bay and William was a carter. According to records, in 1900 Henry was living in Lyttelton.
