Readers’ response:
According to a relative, this is likely to be Harriet Jane Newton nee Bevins. Harriet was born on June 6, 1850, in Colton, Staffordshire, England, and died in Christchurch in 1915. She came as a baby with her parents, John and Harriet Bevins, and the family settled in Governors Bay.

Harriet married Henry (Harry) Newton on November 6, 1867.

Family legend says that Henry was a ship’s carpenter and jumped ship in New Zealand in about 1865. Henry operated a barge service from Teddington to Christchurch and in 1875 built the Wheatsheaf Pub, in Teddington. The couple later moved to the Kaituna Valley.

Harriet and Henry had 11 children and many of their descendants still live in the Christchurch or Banks Peninsula area. 1
