Original information:
William Ward Stokes (4; 1846-1925) married Elizabeth Ann Satterley in 1866. He was working as a teamster for Ashworths in Woodend, and was also a shearer. By 1876 he had moved back to Harewood Road and then the family moved to Timaru. He had eight children. He retired to New Brighton around 1915.
His descendants are well known as bakers and firemen. The New Brighton Stokes served with some distinction as firemen. Roy Stokes can be seen in a photo held by the Christchurch Library with a fire hose fighting the Ballantynes fire. The Roy Stokes Hall is named in his honour.
