According to a family member, this is Hannah Cochrane (nee Pleace). Hannah married Edward Boby, a cabin passenger on the Randolph, in Lyttelton on August 27, 1851. 1 The marriage certificate shows Hannah as being a nurse and Edward as a storeman. 1 Edward Boby was a shepherd on Mount Brown Station; had a small holding at Waipara (in the district there is a Boby’s Creek and Boby’s Bridge); then moved to Hokitika. He died in 1868, aged 43. Hannah remarried, to John Cochrane, a miner, at Okarito on April 16, 1874.
Hannah and Edward Boby had four sons and a daughter. Two of the sons died in childhood. Their eldest son, Charles William Edward (1852-1915) ran the Bealey Hotel from 1878 to 1880. From 1882 to 1885 he was a cab owner in Nursery Road, Linwood. He married Ann Jane Burrows in 1875. Their third son, Ernest Linton (1856-1885), was a hotel keeper at the Royal Hotel, Okarito, from 1882 to 1886. He married Elizabeth Ellen Mckaskell in 1881. Their daughter, Hannah Maria (1860-1895), married William Park in 1878 and moved to Palmerston North. They had 11 children. Hannah Cochrane died at Jubilee Home, Christchurch, on June 8, 1908, aged 83. She outlived most of her children. 3
