Enoch Smart

Original information:
William (45) and Sarah (39) Smart, with 12 children, were the largest family on the Randolph. Two more children were born in New Zealand.

Enoch was aged six on board. William died in January 1853, the result of a sawmilling accident in Papanui. Sarah remained in Riccarton for a while but later moved to Templeton with at least two of her sons, Amos and Enoch. She died there in 1873.

Enoch (1844-1907) was a farm labourer, working and living in Templeton, Prebbleton and Kirwee. He married Margaret Goodwin in the Anglican Church, but 11 of their 12 children were baptised Catholic. He died on March 10, 1907, when his youngest child was nine.

Readers’ response:
Enoch Smart was born in Rugby, Northamptonshire. He built sod fences in the Templeton district. ¹
