Original information:
Jabez Thornton, a carpenter (1817-1904), migrated to Canterbury alone when he was 32. Sources show that in 1900 he was living in Strowan, Fendalton

Readers’ response:
Jabez Thornton (May 12, 1817-August 5, 1904) married Mary Coster (1826-1872) on September 16, 1852. They had five children − Edward (b. 1853), Miriam Hepzibah (b. 1855), John (b. 1858), Thomas (b. 1860) and William (b. 1863). The couple were married in what is referred to as the “temporary church’’ in Lyttelton, where he lived for some of his time in Canterbury.

Jabez’s residence changed a number of times − his addresses are given as Lyttelton, North Belt (now Bealey Avenue), Carlton Terrace and Bryndwr. 1
